Based on decades of shop experience repairing and building wheels, we have invented and engineered two tools that make it easier for the mechanic to replace spoke nipples and spokes and to build bicycle wheels. WHEEL BUILDING AND REPAIRING SERVICES:
One of the biggest improvements that can be made to enhance the performance of your bike is to its wheels! Repair, upgrade, and/or overhaul your bike’s wheels, or purchase new, hand-built (bespoke or custom) wheels to experience dramatic improvements to the overall performance of your bike, regardless whether it is built for racing, utility, commuting, or touring.
Please send us your rims and hubs for new builds, or just send us your existing wheels to get them repaired! We’ll build your new wheels or repair your existing ones, and then send them back to you!
Mike’s Bikes offers four services to improve your wheels:
- Spoke Cutting and Threading:
- Buy only the quantity of spokes needed for your new builds or repairs;
- Prevent waste and un-used inventory with a ‘just-in-time’ and ‘lean manufacturing’ approach, and
- Spokes processed at Mike’s Bikes are accurately cut to length, improving the quality of repairs and new builds.
- Wheel Repairing: A little work may be all that is required to restore the performance of your existing wheels!
- Replacing individual spokes and nipples;
- Re-lacing an entire wheel with new nipples;
- Re-building an existing wheel to a different lacing pattern;
- Installing new rims to replace existing rims worn and/or damaged;
- Truing (axial and radial) and tensioning wheels, and
- Removing an existing hub and installing a new/overhauled hub.

- Mike’s Bikes will build your wheels, by hand, with your new hubs and rims, and then ship the completed wheels to you;
- Don’t worry about the spokes! Mike’s Bikes will advise on the correct gauge and lacing pattern, calculate the correct lengths, cut the spokes and form the threads, and then hand-build your new wheels with them;
- Need new hubs and/or rims? No problem! Mike’s Bikes can supply all the hubs, rims, and spokes for your new wheels, custom specified to fit your exacting requirements for performance and budget.
- Hub Repairing: All that may be required to restore or perhaps even improve the performance of your existing hubs is a thorough cleaning, and/or perhaps a few new parts such as bearings, seals, and/or ratchets and pawls (or quite possibly a spring or two…).
- cleaning: removal of oils and greases, road dirt and grit, etc.;
- cleaning or, where necessary, replacement of freewheel bodies, rachets, pawls, and/or springs;
- bearing replacement: steel or ceramic bearings;
- cleaning or, where necessary, replacement of seals;
- re-threading or replacement of axles, and
- new bearing and axle caps.

1. Building new and/or repairing existing wheels: Send us the parts (hubs, spokes, and rims) and we’ll ship you back a completed wheel or wheelset; if it’s an existing wheel requiring service, ship it to us and we’ll repair it.
2. Replacing the hub, rim, nipples, and/or spokes of an existing wheel will require taking the wheel apart, the cost of doing which would be added to the cost of labour described in no. 1 above.
3. Truing an existing wheel: An existing wheel can be re-trued if it has a slight wobble and the rim is without any dents and/or not bent (plastic deformations due to impact). A wheel with a slight wobble but is very bent cannot be re-trued (typically, re-truing cannot remove large axial and/or radial plastic deformations of the rim). In such circumstances, a new rim generally is necessary.
4. Re-dishing an existing wheel: Generally, the cost of re-dishing an existing wheel is included in the cost of a basic truing. On the other hand, if an existing wheel is sent to us to be re-dished, then the cost to perform that service will be the same as a basic truing.

Purchasing new, hand-built wheels (bespoke or custom) also can improve the overall performance capability of your bike, regardless whether it is built for racing (road, track, or mountain), utility, commuting, touring, or gravel and adventure.
In addition to the Wheel Services described above, Mike’s Bikes also designs and hand-builds complete new wheels (bespoke and custom, to-order). In this case, in addition to designing and building your new wheels, we supply also the new components – rims, hubs, and spokes, even the tires and tubes – to meet your specific requirements for durability, performance, and budget. All you need to do is send us your order and leave all the details to us. Mike’s Bikes will send you the complete wheel(s) in return!
